Gusts, tornadoes and hurricanes in Miami

Estimated peak gusts

No day since October 1, 2021 had an estimated peak gust of 58 mph or more at Miami.

DayEstimated peak gust
Dec 16, 202350 mph or more
Nov 15, 202350 mph or more

Estimates: the highest gust of each storm day in NOAA’s hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. Analyses like this smooth out short thunderstorm gusts, so they are best for widespread wind (hurricanes, winter storms, high wind days); for thunderstorm wind, NOAA’s wind reports are the better record. Not a measurement at any building.

Tornadoes within 10 miles

NOAA recorded 69 tornadoes whose path came within 10 miles of Miami since 1950; the strongest was rated EF3.

Storms in Miami

An NWS Miami study of South Florida severe weather from 1955 to 2004 found that severe hail reports peak sharply in May, while severe wind reports and tornadoes peak in June.1 The same study says the South Florida severe weather season peaks in late spring and early summer and runs well into late summer, partly because of tropical systems.1

Notable storms

  1. November 15, 2023A low pressure system on a stalled front brought gusts of 60 to 70 mph to the Southeast Florida coast, including 75 mph at an elevated sensor at Government Cut and 55 mph in North Miami. NWS Miami reported extensive tree damage along the coast.2
  2. April 3, 2022Late afternoon storms dropped hail from quarter size to near golf ball size around Kendall, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists 1.5-inch hail near SW 92nd Avenue and Miller Drive.3
  3. September 10, 2017Hurricane Irma's winds gusted to 99 mph at Miami International Airport. Storm tide reached 5 to 6 feet above mean higher high water along Biscayne Bay south of downtown, flooding Coconut Grove 3 to 5 feet deep at the shoreline and Brickell streets within half a mile of the bay 2 to 3 feet deep.4,5
  4. June 15, 2012Afternoon thunderstorms dropped hail up to 3 inches across, the size of baseballs, in the Coral Gables area. NWS Miami said it was only the 5th time since 1955 that baseball-size or larger hail was reported in South Florida.6,7
  5. May 12, 1997An F1 tornado with winds estimated at 100 to 110 mph touched down in the Silver Bluff Estates area, crossed I-95 and moved through downtown Miami before crossing Biscayne Bay toward Miami Beach. NWS Miami says it blew out windows in several downtown buildings, caused about a dozen minor injuries and did an estimated $526,000 in damage along an 8-mile path.8
  6. August 24, 1992Hurricane Andrew struck south Miami-Dade County as a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph. NWS Miami says it caused an estimated $26 billion in damage in the United States, almost all of it in southern Dade County.9
