What happened
After crossing the Bahamas, Erin made landfall near Vero Beach, Florida, at about 2:15 a.m. EDT on August 2, 1995, as a Category 1 hurricane with 75-knot (86 mph) winds and a 984 mb central pressure.1 It crossed the peninsula and the eastern Gulf and came ashore again at Pensacola Beach at 11 a.m. CDT on August 3 with 75-knot (86 mph) winds and a 973 mb pressure. Earlier that morning, a small part of its northeastern eyewall brought an estimated 85-knot (98 mph) wind ashore near Fort Walton Beach.1
On the east coast, NWS Melbourne estimated a 2 to 4 foot storm tide, and up to about 12 inches of rain fell southwest through northwest of its office. Thousands of homes and businesses were damaged in Brevard County, and rain flooded parts of the Melbourne and Palm Bay areas.1
In the Panhandle, storm tides reached an estimated 6 to 7 feet just west of Navarre Beach and 3 to 4 feet along Pensacola Beach. Pensacola Naval Air Station measured an 88-knot (101 mph) gust, the highest at an official Panhandle station.1 More than 2,000 homes were damaged on Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach, around Mary Esther and in northeast Pensacola, and about 100 more inland in Alabama.1 NHC tentatively estimated total US damage at $700 million. It reported no deaths in Florida, but six people drowned in the Atlantic and Gulf waters off the state.1
