Gusts, tornadoes and hurricanes in Tampa
Estimated peak gusts
1 day since October 1, 2021 had an estimated peak gust of 58 mph or more at Tampa.
| Day | Estimated peak gust |
|---|---|
| Oct 9, 2024 | 80 mph or more |
| Sep 26, 2024 | 50 mph or more |
| Sep 28, 2022 | 50 mph or more |
Estimates: the highest gust of each storm day in NOAA’s hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. Analyses like this smooth out short thunderstorm gusts, so they are best for widespread wind (hurricanes, winter storms, high wind days); for thunderstorm wind, NOAA’s wind reports are the better record. Not a measurement at any building.

Storms in Tampa
Landforms around Tampa Bay focus sea breeze convergence, producing thunderstorms on more than 100 days a year, more than any other part of the country.1 Across Florida, about 60 percent of hail reports come in the summer storm season, with a peak in June, but the largest hail falls in the cool season, with a peak in March, when freezing levels are lower.1 On a Florida Climate Institute map of hail events from 1986 to 2015, Hillsborough County ranks second in the state, after Orange County, for land area historically hit by hail.1
Notable storms
- June 2, 2025Morning storms dropped hail up to 1.5 inches across, ping pong ball size, near Interstate 4 and U.S. Highway 301, with several reports of quarter-size hail near the Florida State Fairgrounds. A 64 mph wind gust was reported on Davis Islands.2,3,4
- October 9, 2024Hurricane Milton made landfall on Siesta Key on the night of October 9, 2024, bringing hurricane conditions to the coast from Clearwater Beach and Tampa south to near Venice. Tampa International Airport recorded a gust of 83 knots (96 mph) and 11.73 inches of rain, and the Hillsborough River reached record-high crests.5
- September 26, 2024Hurricane Helene's storm surge in Tampa Bay reached 5 to 7 feet above ground, and tide gauges at East Bay and Old Port Tampa measured water 7.2 and 6.83 feet above mean higher high water. The surge killed two people in Hillsborough County.6
- April 24, 2023A thunderstorm dropped 3-inch hail in Antioch, north of Plant City in Hillsborough County. Hail 1 inch across fell southeast of Hillsborough River State Park the same afternoon.7,8,9
- March 14, 2005A thunderstorm microburst hit Seminole Heights along a 1.5-mile path, blowing down dozens of trees and large limbs and at least a dozen power lines and transformers.10
- March 13, 1993The squall line of the 1993 Storm of the Century crossed the Florida peninsula overnight on March 12 to 13 as a derecho, with measured gusts reaching 96 mph in the Tampa Bay area. Its winds and embedded tornadoes killed seven people and injured 79 across Florida.11
