Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

Hurricane Milton set off a tornado outbreak across south and central Florida on October 9, 2024. NHC counts 45 tornadoes on land, three of them rated EF3, and 14 injuries.1 The EF3 that killed six people, all in the Spanish Lakes community, tracked about 21 miles from Fort Pierce into Indian River County with peak winds of 155 mph. It collapsed more than half of two large warehouses and a steel building and destroyed manufactured homes.1,2 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $475 million in property damage in St. Lucie County and $39 million in Indian River County, where sections of roof were torn off condominium buildings in Vero Beach.2,3 A second EF3 ran about 29 miles from Wellington through The Acreage and Palm Beach Gardens to Jupiter Farms, shattering impact-resistant windows and damaging roofs. NOAA lists 15 structures destroyed, 321 damaged, 7 injuries and $81.35 million in damage.4 The third EF3 tore the second stories off three homes in Lakeport in Glades County.5

Milton made landfall on Siesta Key at about 8:30 p.m. EDT as a Category 3 hurricane with 100-knot (115 mph) winds. Storm surge flooded land 6 to 9 feet deep from Venice to Boca Grande, and 4 to 6 feet from Longboat Key to Venice and from Boca Grande to Bonita Beach.1 Gusts of 80 to 100 mph across Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota counties caused widespread structural and tree damage.6 NOAA's NCEI estimated Milton's damage in the United States at $34.3 billion.1
