Gusts, tornadoes and hurricanes in Tallahassee
Estimated peak gusts
No day since October 1, 2021 had an estimated peak gust of 58 mph or more at Tallahassee.
| Day | Estimated peak gust |
|---|---|
| Sep 26, 2024 | 50 mph or more |
| Apr 10, 2024 | 50 mph or more |
| Jan 9, 2024 | 50 mph or more |
| Mar 31, 2022 | 50 mph or more |
Estimates: the highest gust of each storm day in NOAA’s hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. Analyses like this smooth out short thunderstorm gusts, so they are best for widespread wind (hurricanes, winter storms, high wind days); for thunderstorm wind, NOAA’s wind reports are the better record. Not a measurement at any building.

Storms in Tallahassee
NWS Tallahassee says severe weather in its region typically peaks in spring, with a secondary maximum in November.1 In summer, isolated severe storms are possible almost any day, but large outbreaks are much less common.1 NWS Tallahassee lists Hurricane Idalia in 2023 and Hurricanes Debby and Helene in 2024 as landfalls in the Florida Big Bend.2
Notable storms
- May 10, 2024Two EF-2 tornadoes in a squall line converged on Tallahassee, and the FAMU WeatherSTEM site measured an 84 mph gust, above the 83 mph Tallahassee airport record from September 11, 1990. More than 400 utility poles broke, and NOAA's storm records estimate about $184 million in damage in Tallahassee.3,4
- January 27, 2021An EF1 tornado with peak winds near 90 mph touched down just west of Tallahassee International Airport and tracked about 21 miles. At the airport it moved a parked 737, spun a regional jet 90 degrees and flipped a small plane upside down, and NWS Tallahassee reported no injuries.5,6
- March 3, 2019An EF3 tornado with peak winds of 140 mph touched down near U.S. 90 and Crump Road in eastern Leon County and tracked 6.5 miles into Jefferson County, destroying two homes near Steeds Run. NWS Tallahassee called it only the second F3 or EF3 to hit Leon County since 1945.7,8
- October 10, 2018Hurricane Michael brought about 12 hours of tropical storm force gusts to Leon County, and Tallahassee International Airport recorded a 71 mph peak gust. Nearly 1,200 homes in the county were damaged, 25 of them destroyed.9
- September 2, 2016Hurricane Hermine made landfall just east of St. Marks, and the FSU WeatherSTEM site at Doak Campbell Stadium recorded a 64 mph gust. About 80% of Tallahassee customers lost power.10
- February 24, 2013Golf ball-size hail fell around Buck Lake, and an NWS employee living there reported that about 80 homes had roof damage and needed new roofs, per NOAA's storm records. The records list $720,000 in property damage from the hail.11
