Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

On the afternoon of July 20, 2023, hail up to baseball size, 2.75 inches across, fell on Davison in Genesee County, Michigan, damaging vehicles, homes and businesses across the town.1 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $20 million in property damage from the Davison hail.1 Hail 2 inches across fell in Ypsilanti, and falling trees hit some homes in southeast Michigan.1

In western Kansas, an NWS survey found straight-line wind gusts up to 115 mph, and about 10 miles south of Wallace in Wallace County the wind destroyed a farm outbuilding and a machine shed.2 About 8 miles north of Marienthal in Wichita County, gusts estimated at 91 knots (105 mph) destroyed a garage that afternoon, and that evening wind destroyed a pole-barn garage and two machine sheds and blew a small grain bin off its foundation.3,4

Hail up to 2.5 inches across fell between South Bend and Elkhart, Indiana, before the storms brought wind damage to Fort Wayne.5 Near Ohio City in Van Wert County, Ohio, a tree blown down by the storm killed one person.6
