Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

Around 8 p.m. CDT on June 21, 2023, a tornado about a third of a mile wide moved through the west side of Matador, Texas, killing four people and injuring 15.1 Surveyors rated it EF3, with peak winds estimated at 145 to 165 mph. It destroyed three houses and a steel-framed store, damaged several other homes and partly collapsed a power substation.1 The same storm dropped hail from baseball size up to 4.5 inches across in Matador.2 Later, its winds, estimated at 104 knots (120 mph), tore all or part of the roofs off two homes in Girard and destroyed several outbuildings in Jayton.3 Hail up to 4 inches across fell along State Highway 70 between Jayton and Girard.4

Between about 6:25 and 6:45 p.m. CDT, downburst winds estimated at 78 knots (90 mph) struck a line from south of Fairfield to Buffalo, Texas, damaging roofs on many buildings in and around Buffalo.5 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $1 million in property damage in Leon County from these winds.5

In Colorado, hail up to 2 inches across fell on a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Jefferson County around 9:26 p.m. MDT, injuring 90 people, seven of whom were hospitalized.6 Earlier, 33 tornadoes touched down in Washington County, and an EF2 near Akron destroyed a large barn and grain bins.7 A commercial building collapsed in Sterling.7
