What happened

On the evening of June 17, one nearly stationary storm produced six tornadoes in Cedar County in northeast Nebraska, according to NWS Omaha.1 The strongest, an EF3, was on the ground from 8:09 to 8:55 p.m. CDT and caused significant structural damage on the east side of Coleridge.1,2 North of town it destroyed two farmhouses down to their foundations, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $2 million in property damage from this tornado.1,2 Two EF2 tornadoes near Laurel completely destroyed farm outbuildings, and one tore large sections of roof from a farmhouse.1

That afternoon, an EF3 tornado touched down at 2:27 p.m. about 10 miles southwest of Capitol in Carter County, Montana, and stayed on the ground for about an hour over 10 miles.3 It destroyed a trailer home and a small schoolhouse and threw six vehicles up to 200 yards.3 Late that morning, an EF1 tornado with estimated peak winds of 100 mph crossed Hale in Iosco County, Michigan, damaging the roofs of several homes and businesses.4 At 10:44 p.m. CDT, an EF2 tornado with peak winds near 125 mph began south of Humboldt in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, and removed most of the exterior walls of a house.5,6

The largest hail, 5 inches across, fell near Merritt Reservoir in Cherry County, Nebraska, that evening.7 In Hot Springs, South Dakota, golf ball size hail fell with 50 mph gusts, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $500,000 in property damage from that storm.8
