Estimates: the highest gust of each storm day in NOAA’s hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. Analyses like this smooth out short thunderstorm gusts, so they are best for widespread wind (hurricanes, winter storms, high wind days); for thunderstorm wind, NOAA’s wind reports are the better record. Not a measurement at any building.

Storms in El Paso
An NWS El Paso study of reports from 1955 to 1997 found most severe weather in its warning area from June through September, with severe hail peaking in May and June and again in October.1 An NWS El Paso study found summer storms there come with the monsoon, typically late June into early September.2 From November through April, the NWS El Paso study found, severe winds in the area came mostly from strong pressure gradients, not thunderstorms.1
Notable storms
- April 26, 2022Hail up to golf ball size fell in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and toward La Union. Several houses near McNutt Road and the Dominici Highway had roofs destroyed, and many vehicles had significant hail damage. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $500,000 in property damage.3

- September 16, 2009Golf ball to possibly tennis ball size hail fell on far east El Paso for 20 minutes, damaging thousands of vehicles and the skylights, roofs and windows of thousands of buildings. NOAA's storm records list about $150 million in property damage in the area.7,8
- September 28, 2007Hail up to hen's egg size, driven by 60 to 70 mph microburst winds, destroyed skylights, damaged roofs and smashed south-facing windows in west El Paso. NOAA's storm records list about $8.1 million in property damage in the area.9,10
- August 1, 2006Storms dropped 3 to almost 10 inches of rain on parts of El Paso, heaviest in the northwest part of the city, in what an NWS El Paso study called the worst flooding in the area's recorded history. Floodwaters damaged or destroyed homes and businesses, and the study put total damage at nearly $300 million.11
