What happened

One supercell that tracked northeast from Stanton County, Nebraska, produced four EF4 tornadoes between 3:42 and 5:08 p.m. CDT on June 16, 2014.1 The Pilger tornado, on the ground from 4:00 to 4:39 p.m. CDT, struck the town directly, damaging nearly 75 percent of its structures and destroying those nearest the tornado's center.1,2 It killed 1 person and injured 20, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $12 million in property damage from it in Stanton County.2 A second EF4, running parallel to the Pilger tornado, destroyed two homes down to their foundations in Cuming County and killed a man when it flipped the vehicle he was driving.3

At about 10:45 p.m. CDT, an EF2 tornado with peak winds estimated at 120 mph crossed Platteville, Wisconsin, including the University of Wisconsin-Platteville campus and nearby homes and businesses.4,5 It destroyed 12 homes, damaged 20 more and injured 5 people, and NOAA lists $20.5 million in property damage.4,5 Just after midnight, a low-end EF3 tornado with winds near 140 mph hit the northwest side of Verona, badly damaging at least 30 homes and leaving 19 uninhabitable, and NOAA lists $14 million in property damage.6,7 Minutes later, an EF2 with winds near 120 mph damaged at least 23 homes in southwest Madison, some losing much of their roofs.6,8
