What happened

An EF4 tornado with peak winds of 170 mph tracked 31.2 miles from western Douglas County, Nebraska, through Elkhorn and Bennington and just south of Blair, then crossed the Missouri River into Iowa, between 3:30 and 4:29 p.m. CDT on April 26, 2024, injuring 4 people.1 In Elkhorn's Ramblewood subdivision and nearby streets it destroyed some homes and left many others with only small interior rooms standing, and in Bennington's Newport Landing neighborhood it tore large sections of roof off homes.2 Earlier, from 2:52 to 2:57 p.m., an EF3 tornado with 158 mph winds moved from northeast Lincoln toward Waverly, tearing off the roof and three walls of a manufacturing plant and derailing numerous rail cars. Three people were injured.1,3

From 5:25 to 6:29 p.m., an EF3 tornado with winds up to 160 mph tracked 40.9 miles from east of McClelland, Iowa, through the east side of Minden and west of Harlan to just past Defiance.1 On the east side of Minden it destroyed several homes and several large metal buildings and left numerous homes uninhabitable. One person died and 3 were injured.1,4 Another EF3, with 152 mph winds, formed at Eppley Airfield at 4:58 p.m. and damaged numerous homes and businesses near Interstate 29 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, before passing south of Crescent.1,5
