What happened

On April 5, 2022, an EF4 tornado with peak winds estimated at 185 mph tracked 14.5 miles from Pembroke to near Blitchton in Bryan County, Georgia, between 5:18 and 5:33 p.m. EDT.1 It killed one person and injured 12.1 In the Park Place subdivision, where the tornado was up to three-quarters of a mile wide, it heavily damaged most homes and structures and destroyed some outright.2 Several mobile homes near Homestead Drive were destroyed.1 Hail up to 2.75 inches across fell near Ellabell in Bryan County and damaged vehicles.3

Earlier that afternoon, an EF3 tornado with winds near 160 mph hit the Bonaire area of Houston County, Georgia, tearing large sections of roofs and second floors off homes, destroying one home and injuring three people.4 In South Carolina, an EF3 tornado with 137 mph winds crossed 13.4 miles of Allendale County from 3:50 to 4:10 p.m. EDT, destroying a few mobile homes and injuring one person.1 A second EF3, with peak winds of 160 mph, tracked 34.8 miles across Allendale, Bamberg and Orangeburg counties from 6:03 to 6:53 p.m. EDT.1 In Bamberg County it destroyed a mobile home and damaged roofs and siding on other homes.5
