What happened

On the evening of May 20, a supercell raced north across Lubbock, Texas, dropping baseball-size hail on south-central Lubbock and smaller hail across much of the city, including the airport.1 The largest hailstone reported was 3 inches across. A second storm brought hail up to 2 inches from just east of Wolfforth to Texas Tech University.2 NWS Lubbock said the hail damaged and destroyed many vehicles and roofs and shattered numerous vehicle windows.1 The NOAA Storm Events Database lists $100 million in property damage from the Lubbock hail.2

That evening in eastern Montana, an NWS survey near Brockway in McCone County found building damage and sheared power poles that pointed to winds of 105 to 110 mph.3
