What happened

Late on June 28 into early June 29, a line of storms crossed western and central North Dakota with microburst winds strongest along and near Highway 200, where many grain bins were lost and farm buildings and campers were damaged or destroyed.1 Near Stanton in Mercer County, a microburst with winds estimated at 130 mph destroyed a farm, the worst wind damage of the night.1 In Stanton itself, a few garages lost a wall or parts of their roofs.2 At Heckers Lake and New Johns Lake in McLean County, about 30 camping trailers were damaged or destroyed, one man died when a camper blew over onto him, and four people were hurt.3

Earlier, on the morning of June 28, 3-inch hail near Hettinger in Adams County did extensive damage to homes in the area.4 That evening, hail up to 3.5 inches near Harvey in Wells County damaged gutters, siding and roofs of farm buildings.5 Around 8:20 p.m. MDT, an EF3 tornado with winds estimated at 136 mph crossed from Montana into Harding County, South Dakota, about 10 miles south-southwest of Camp Crook, causing considerable structural damage and destroying some farm outbuildings.6

In the early evening, a derecho raced south across western Kentucky with widespread wind damage, and trees fell on houses in Ballard and Carlisle counties.7,8
