What happened

Tornadoes in northern and central Oklahoma killed 11 people and injured 293 on May 24, the NWS in Norman reports.1 The strongest, rated EF5, ran 63 miles from near Hinton past El Reno and Piedmont to near Guthrie from 3:50 to 5:35 p.m. CDT and was up to 1,760 yards wide. It killed 9 people and injured 181.1 A mobile radar measured winds over 210 mph near Interstate 40, and the El Reno Mesonet station recorded a 151 mph gust.1,2 Two EF4 tornadoes crossed Grady and McClain counties. The Chickasha-Blanchard-Newcastle tornado destroyed well-built homes, some swept off their foundations, and the Washington-Goldsby tornado wiped homes off their foundations and injured 61.1

Late that night in Arkansas, a tornado rated EF4 near Etna in Franklin County destroyed well-built homes at about 11 p.m. CST, then destroyed many homes and mobile homes in Denning. Three people were killed in Franklin County.3,4 At 11:25 p.m. CST, an EF3 tornado damaged businesses and homes on the south and east sides of Clarksville. At least 150 residences in Johnson County were damaged or destroyed, and NOAA lists $13 million in property damage.5

Hail 6 inches across fell at Timken in Rush County, Kansas, at 4:21 p.m. CST.6 In Tarrant County, Texas, softball-size hail near Avondale left holes in at least one home's roof, and in Dallas County hail up to grapefruit size broke windows around Irving.7,8
