What happened

Hail 6 inches across fell 2 miles north of Gotebo in Kiowa County, Oklahoma, at 5:32 p.m. CST (6:32 p.m. CDT). Review with the Oklahoma State Climatologist confirmed it as the largest hailstone on record in Oklahoma.1

In northern Ohio, hail from nickel to golf ball size fell across Lorain County, hitting Vermilion, Elyria and North Ridgeville hardest. Many vehicles and some homes were damaged, and NOAA lists $300,000 in property damage.2 At about 6 p.m. EST, a downburst cut a path from North Olmsted to Berea and Middleburg Heights in Cuyahoga County and dropped trees on several homes. NOAA lists $500,000 in property damage.3 An 86 mph gust hit Wood River, Illinois, at 11:42 a.m. CST, and trees it blew down onto houses caused minor to moderate roof damage to some of them.4

At 5:52 p.m. CST, an EF2 tornado with winds near 120 mph began a 13-mile track across Stewart County, Tennessee. Several homes had significant roof damage, one lost its whole roof, and an occupied mobile home was destroyed. Two people were injured.5 The tornado continued into Christian County, Kentucky, where it damaged or destroyed barns and grain bins.6
