Estimates: the highest gust of each storm day in NOAA’s hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. Analyses like this smooth out short thunderstorm gusts, so they are best for widespread wind (hurricanes, winter storms, high wind days); for thunderstorm wind, NOAA’s wind reports are the better record. Not a measurement at any building.

NWS Flagstaff says monsoon moisture usually does not reach northern Arizona until the first week of July, and that September can bring the region's most severe weather.1 An NWS Tucson guide to Arizona's summer severe thunderstorm patterns lists the valleys of Yavapai County among the areas most susceptible when storms on the Mogollon Rim organize into squall lines that winds aloft push southwest.2

  2. July 18, 2018Hail up to 1 inch fell about 2 miles east-northeast of Prescott's Whipple area and damaged about 1,000 cars at shopping centers and car dealerships. NOAA's storm records list about $1.5 million in property damage in the area.4
  3. June 29, 2015Hail 1 inch across fell in Prescott Valley, and pea-size hail piled up 6 inches deep. The Prescott airport weather station measured a 61 mph gust.5,6

  5. September 27, 2014An EF0 tornado touched down near Groom Creek in the Bradshaw Mountains south of Prescott and stayed on the ground for 2.1 miles, with a base width of 700 yards. NWS Flagstaff says four homes had significant damage, and NOAA's storm records list $500,000 in property damage.8,9
  6. September 15, 1999Hail 2.75 inches across fell northeast of Prescott, which an NWS Phoenix list from 2010 ranks among Arizona's 10 largest hailstones since 1950. The list's top entry is 4.5-inch hail near Mayer, also in Yavapai County, on September 28, 1995.10
