Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

On the evening of June 20, 2025, several strong tornadoes hit southeast North Dakota ahead of a derecho that crossed the state and moved into Minnesota overnight.1 A tornado near Enderlin was rated EF5, with winds over 210 mph, after it derailed 33 rail cars in Ransom County.2 In Cass County it leveled farmhouses and destroyed outbuildings, killing three people.3 An EF3 tornado that formed near Spiritwood and moved into Barnes County heavily damaged homes and a metal building and destroyed several other farm buildings.4

Earlier, between about 7:50 and 8:25 p.m. CDT, hail up to 3 inches fell on Jamestown.5 It damaged many roofs, punched holes through some roof sheathing and badly damaged vehicles across the city. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $10 million in property damage.6 Winds estimated at 110 mph tore shingles, sheathing and siding off homes in the Copper Ridge subdivision south of Lincoln in Burleigh County. The database lists $5 million in property damage there.7 The derecho brought gusts of 80 to 100 mph across south central North Dakota, including 101 mph near Linton.5

In Minnesota, straight-line winds of 80 to 120 mph cut a 30-mile swath across Clearwater, Beltrami and Hubbard counties and through downtown Bemidji, where the airport measured a 106 mph gust.8,1 Homes, commercial and government buildings there had roofs damaged or destroyed and windows broken, and garages and outbuildings were destroyed. The database lists $15 million in property damage in Beltrami County.8
