Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

During the evening of July 15, 2024, a derecho crossed Iowa, Illinois and Indiana with damaging winds of 60 mph and locally up to 100 mph, mostly from eastern Iowa through northern and central Illinois.1 NWS Chicago confirmed 32 tornadoes in its area, including 11 in Cook County and 4 inside Chicago city limits. The busiest stretch was 8:25 to 10:30 p.m. CDT, when two or more were often on the ground at once.1 An EF2 tornado with peak winds of 130 mph tracked 34.6 miles from Channahon to Matteson, damaged roofs on homes in Channahon and injured two motorists on Interstate 55.1,2 Tornadoes peeled roofing off apartment buildings in Broadview and distribution centers in Manteno.1 In Cedar Lake, Indiana, one person died when straight-line winds dropped a large tree limb onto a house.1

Earlier, in Iowa, an EF1 tornado crossed Clive, Urbandale and Windsor Heights into Des Moines, damaging homes and power lines. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $500,000 in property damage.3 The Dubuque County emergency manager measured a 97 mph gust near Holy Cross, Iowa.4 In central Illinois, an EF1 tornado with 100 mph winds removed large sections of roof from a couple of homes in Kewanee, and 85 to 95 mph straight-line winds peeled metal roof panels off in Minonk.5,6
