Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

Between 5:37 and 6:07 p.m. CDT on May 8, 2024, an EF3 tornado with peak winds estimated at 140 mph tracked 12.5 miles from east of Columbia, Tennessee, into far western Marshall County.1 It removed large sections of roofs from homes along Old Highway 99 and Blackburn Lane, and damaged more homes after crossing Interstate 65. One person was killed and 12 were injured.1 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $10 million in damage in Maury County.2

In northeast Alabama, an EF3 with winds near 140 mph crossed Jackson County near Pisgah at about 10:57 p.m. CDT. It heavily damaged homes, destroyed a well-anchored metal building and injured seven people, and the database lists $4.5 million in damage.3 Earlier, at about 8:27 p.m., another EF3 crossed the Tennessee River into a neighborhood near Ripley in Limestone County, where several homes were heavily damaged and others had roof damage and broken windows.4

In southern Missouri, hail up to 4 inches across fell north of Ava in Douglas County at about 6:30 p.m. CDT. About 30 homes from the north side of Ava northward had roof, window and siding damage, and the database lists $1.3 million in damage.5
