Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

An EF4 tornado formed southeast of Hominy in Osage County, Oklahoma, at about 9:12 p.m. CDT on May 6, 2024, and moved northeast through Barnsdall.1 NWS surveyors estimated winds of 170 to 180 mph in that segment. In Barnsdall, more than 110 homes and businesses were damaged and 65 destroyed, two people were killed and at least 33 were injured. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $10 million in damage in Osage County.1 The same tornado entered Washington County at about 9:57 p.m. and crossed Bartlesville with winds of 115 to 125 mph, damaging an estimated 1,000 homes and businesses. The database lists $15 million in damage in Washington County.2

Around 11:37 p.m., straight-line winds estimated at 91 knots (105 mph) caved in garage doors at homes in far northwest Cleveland County, near Moore, and the homes then lost shingles and roof decking.3 Minutes later an EF1 tornado crossed south Oklahoma City near Interstate 240, damaging roofs on a few apartment buildings and at two apartment complexes, and damaging businesses along Western Avenue.4 Winds near 87 knots (100 mph) in southern Oklahoma County blew out windows or damaged roofs at homes and businesses.5

In Kansas, hail up to 4 inches across fell near Upland in Dickinson County around 8:26 p.m. CDT, and 3-inch hail hit near Claflin in Barton County.6,7
