Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

On the afternoon of August 8, 2023, one storm in northeast Colorado produced seven tornadoes and gusts up to 100 mph as it crossed Yuma County.1 The strongest, an EF3 that began near Hyde, looped southwest of Yuma and damaged buildings, three grain bins and many power poles. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $1 million in damage.1 The same storm dropped a 5.25-inch hailstone on Highway 36 near Kirk at 6:22 p.m. MST, later confirmed as Colorado's largest on record.2

That night, baseball-size hail broke double-pane windows in far northwest Cheyenne County, Colorado, and smaller hail piled up 6 inches deep a few miles away.3
