Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

In the Mid-Atlantic on August 7, 2023, the most widespread wind damage was in northern Maryland.1 Near and north of Westminster in Carroll County, gusts estimated at 78 knots (90 mph) blew down thousands of trees and snapped 30 utility poles, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $20 million in property damage there.1 Around Manchester and Hampstead, trees fell onto houses and cars, several homes had minor roof, shingle and siding damage, and several barns were destroyed, with another $10 million in damage listed.2 Farther south, trees fell on homes across Charlotte, North Carolina, injuring one man, and a falling tree killed a 15-year-old in Anderson, South Carolina.3,4

At 1:17 p.m. EST, an EF2 tornado in west Knox County, Tennessee, tore off parts of roofs on homes and apartment buildings and collapsed a garage. The database lists $3.7 million in damage.5 At 6:42 p.m. EST, an EF3 tornado began a 16-mile track in Lewis County, New York, from near West Leyden to Turin, taking roofs off homes and causing complete roof failures on several buildings near Turin. The database lists $1.5 million in damage.6 The largest hail, 4.75 inches, fell near Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County, Virginia, and hail about 4 inches across fell north of Clear Spring, Maryland.7
