Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

A derecho crossed South Dakota on July 5. The storms entered the northwest of the state early in the day and moved southeast across it into northern Iowa.1 Hail up to softball size fell in central South Dakota, including 4-inch hail in Promise around 9:13 a.m. MDT.1 Gusts reached 91 mph north of Agar and 87 mph in Ree Heights, and the storms damaged trees, grain bins, crops and vehicles.1

Farther southeast, a state road weather station near Howard measured a 99 mph gust and the Huron airport measured 96 mph.2 The Sioux Falls airport recorded an 80 mph gust at 4:40 p.m. CDT.2 The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls reported overturned semitrucks, damage to houses and fences, and widespread crop damage.2 Between Pickstown and Wagner, wind gusts caused a head-on crash on Highway 46 that killed both drivers.3

In Sioux County, Nebraska, hail up to 4.3 inches across fell about 10 miles southwest of Agate in the late afternoon.4 Near Bowie, Maryland, a brief EF1 tornado was on the ground from 5:31 to 5:34 p.m. EDT and caused extensive tree damage in a neighborhood north of the city. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $250,000 in property damage.5
