Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

In south central Nebraska, most severe storm reports came between about 9:30 p.m. CDT on June 14 and 3:30 a.m. CDT on June 15, from a band 10 to 20 miles wide running from Elwood through Kearney and Doniphan to York.1 Hastings, York and other towns were hit by three or four separate severe storms within 2 to 4 hours.1 Hail, much of it golf ball to tennis ball size, and winds of 60 to 75 mph, locally 90 to 100 mph or more, broke windows, damaged siding, demolished some outbuildings and grain bins and caused minor structural damage to a few homes.1

In York, hail up to 2.5 inches fell at about 9:40 p.m. CDT, and a later storm after midnight brought tennis-ball-size hail to the east side of town.1,2 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $10 million in property damage for the first York hail, $8 million for the second, and $10 million for hail up to 2.25 inches in Hastings.1,2,3 An EF2 tornado that formed about 2 miles west-southwest of Lushton in York County at about 12:15 a.m. CDT tore a garage from a home, destroyed outbuildings and grain bins, and injured 2 people.4

Farther east, a downburst several miles wide brought 60 to 80 mph winds and gusts near 100 mph to Greenwood, Murdock, Louisville and Manley in Cass County at about 11:20 p.m. CDT, damaging buildings and grain bins.5 Hail up to 3.5 inches fell near Malcolm in Lancaster County at about 11 p.m. CDT.6
