Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

On the evening of March 22, 2022, a tornado touched down in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, and crossed the West Bank into New Orleans, causing minor roof, siding and fence damage.1,2 It reached EF3 strength with winds estimated at 160 mph in Arabi in St. Bernard Parish, where houses were swept off their foundations. Across a strip about four blocks wide, nearly every house had roof damage and many had walls collapse.3 NOAA lists one death caused directly by the tornado, one indirect death and two injuries in Arabi.3 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $30 million in property damage in St. Bernard Parish and $2.5 million more in Jefferson and Orleans parishes.1,2,3,4

Earlier in the day, a line of severe storms crossed Mississippi with widespread wind damage and numerous tornadoes.5 In Kemper County, an EF3 with winds near 145 mph tracked about 9 miles, destroying a home and a manufactured home and shifting another house off its foundation.6 An EF1 with winds near 110 mph caused significant roof damage to many kinds of buildings in Goodman in Holmes County, with $600,000 in property damage listed.7
