What happened

A derecho swept across Iowa, northern Illinois and northern Indiana during the day on August 10, 2020.1 In central Iowa, the Marshalltown airport measured a 99 mph gust, and storm chasers reported large sections of roof blown off buildings along Old Highway 30 in Marshalltown.2 Winds estimated at 110 to 140 mph destroyed or damaged barns, grain bins, homes, mobile homes and apartment buildings in parts of Benton, Linn, Jones, Cedar and Clinton counties. A station at Atkins in Benton County measured an unofficial 126 mph gust.3 The Cedar Rapids area was hit especially hard. NWS Quad Cities says several homes, apartment complexes and businesses there had damage consistent with 130 to 140 mph winds.3

NWS Chicago confirmed 15 tornadoes across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, all EF0 or EF1, including an EF1 in Chicago's Rogers Park. Straight-line winds near 90 mph did the most notable damage in and around Harvey, and many communities had at least minor structural damage.1 NWS Chicago puts the derecho's damage at $11.5 billion and says four people died. In the NWS Chicago forecast area, 12 people were injured.1
