What happened

Hail up to 5.33 inches across fell near Burkburnett in Wichita County, Texas, on the evening of May 22, and 4-inch hail fell near Frederick, Oklahoma.1,2 Earlier, hail up to golf-ball size fell near Cumming in Forsyth County, Georgia. The NOAA Storm Events Database lists $5 million in property damage there.3

Straight-line winds of 65 to 80 mph, with pockets of 80 to 90 mph, swept through Bowie, Texas, that evening. Fallen trees caused roof and structural damage to homes, and many commercial buildings had light roof, fascia and sign damage.4 An EF1 tornado with winds near 95 mph tracked about a mile into downtown Bowie, causing substantial roof and wall damage to one-story and multistory buildings.5 Storm Events lists $1 million in property damage from the Bowie winds and $500,000 from the tornado.4,5

In the afternoon, storm winds in Charlotte, North Carolina, blew trees onto about a dozen homes in the Dilworth and Elizabeth neighborhoods. One falling tree killed one person and seriously injured another.6
