What happened

At 11:12 a.m. CST on February 7, an EF3 tornado with peak winds around 150 mph touched down in New Orleans east of the Industrial Canal and tracked about 10 miles to Lake Borgne.1 It did moderate to severe damage to 638 homes, about half of them beyond repair, and to at least 40 businesses, and injured 33 people.1 North of Chef Menteur Boulevard, dozens of homes lost all or much of their roofs, some had walls collapse, and a few two-story homes lost nearly all of their top floor.1

An EF3 tornado that touched down northeast of Watson in Livingston Parish at 11:50 a.m. CST reached winds near 140 mph and destroyed three manufactured homes.2 Earlier, at 10:20 a.m. CST, an EF2 that began near Killian destroyed a home and three barns, seriously injuring two people.3 An EF1 from Donaldsonville damaged about 18 homes in Ascension Parish and 18 in St. James Parish, where 4 were heavily damaged or destroyed and a man died.4,5

At about 3:34 p.m. CST, winds of 70 to 90 mph hit Niceville, Florida, and 87 mph gusts were measured on Okaloosa Island and Choctawhatchee Bay. A few condos and businesses in and around Destin had significant roof damage. NOAA lists $350,000 in property damage in the two areas.6,7 From 10:08 to 10:35 p.m. EST, downbursts with gusts estimated at 70 to 80 mph caused extensive damage to homes in Keystone Heights, Clay Hill and Orange Park in Clay County, Florida, leaving some uninhabitable.8
