What happened

On the morning of July 24, an EF1 tornado formed over the Chesapeake Bay west of a campground near Cape Charles, Virginia, and tracked east 7.7 miles across the campground and Route 13 in Northampton County. It damaged many camping trailers, destroyed several and injured 5 people.1 A downburst with winds of 65 knots (75 mph) hit the same area, from the campground south into Cape Charles and east through Cheriton to Oyster. It overturned several large camping trailers and dropped trees on a couple of homes.2 Three people died when a tree fell on the tents where they were sheltering, and 31 people were injured.2 Golf ball size hail, with a few reports of baseball size hail near the campground, fell in a band east to Oyster, and wind-driven hail damaged siding on a number of homes.3 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $750,000 in property damage from the wind, $200,000 from the tornado and $100,000 from the hail.1,2,3
