What happened

At about 7:02 p.m. EDT on July 8, an EF2 tornado with winds near 135 mph struck Smithfield in Madison County, New York, on a path 2.5 miles long and 235 yards wide.1,2 It killed 4 people, destroyed 3 homes and badly damaged 5 more. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $600,000 in property damage.2 EF1 tornadoes with winds of 80 to 100 mph also hit New London and Deerfield in Oneida County, New York, and Kingsley and New Albany in Susquehanna and Bradford counties, Pennsylvania. They peeled back roofs, collapsed a barn and dropped large trees on several homes.1 Straight-line winds of 65 to 85 mph downed large trees and a few power poles along a 50-mile path from East Syracuse to Trenton Falls, and winds near Remsen reached 85 to 95 mph.1

That afternoon in Wood County, West Virginia, winds estimated as high as 95 mph hit the Washington Bottom area near Parkersburg. Around a dozen homes were damaged, mostly their roofs, and the database lists $350,000 in damage.3 Near New Buffalo in Perry County, Pennsylvania, a microburst with winds of 90 to 100 mph downed trees and utility poles, damaged a house and knocked down much of a barn.4 In South Burlington, Vermont, winds of 60 knots (69 mph) brought down trees and branches that damaged buildings and vehicles, including at the airport. The database lists $500,000 in damage.5
