What happened

On the morning of June 30, hail up to 3 inches damaged windows, cars and roofs in and around Harlan, Iowa.1 Hail up to 4 inches fell near Rockwell City in Calhoun County.2,3 In Adair, the emergency manager reported that wind-driven hail damaged about 190 homes, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $10 million in property damage there.4 Baseball size hail and winds up to 70 mph damaged houses and other buildings across southern Guthrie County.5

That afternoon near Fairfax in Linn County, winds blew the roof off a building and its walls collapsed, killing one person and injuring another.6 That evening, an EF1 tornado with winds up to 95 mph crossed between Plainfield and Romeoville, Illinois, peeling siding and shingles and blowing out windows at numerous homes.7 In Kankakee County, Illinois, an EF2 tornado with 115 mph winds damaged a house beyond repair and destroyed numerous barns and outbuildings.8

After midnight, an NWS survey found winds of 80 to 90 mph near Albion, Michigan, that blew the roof off a home, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $2 million in property damage for that event.9 In northern Indiana, falling trees killed two people in homes in LaGrange and Kosciusko counties overnight.10,11
