What happened

A brief EF2 tornado with winds up to 125 mph hit north-northeast of Fort Payne, Alabama, at 12:28 a.m. CST on February 21, 2014.1 It flipped three tractor-trailers at an industrial plant and stripped much of the siding from a nearby metal building and lifted its roof. Two homes lost their roofs and had at least two exterior walls collapse. Nearby, a two-story apartment complex had part of its roof lifted, lost siding and had windows broken. One person was hurt.1

In central Illinois on the afternoon of February 20, an EF1 tornado tracked about 8 miles from south of Mechanicsburg toward Illiopolis, damaging outbuildings and the roofs of several homes. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $990,000 in property damage.2 In the Missouri Bootheel, golf ball size hail (1.75 inches) fell around Hornersville, and an EF1 tornado near Deering overturned a trailer, damaged roofs on several homes and injured five people.3,4 Late that night, winds damaged a mobile home in Marion County, Tennessee, and NOAA's database lists two deaths, both in mobile homes, and one injury there.5
