What happened

On the afternoon of June 7, 2012, hail of baseball to grapefruit size, about 4 inches across, fell on the west side of Wheatland, Wyoming, breaking several windows and damaging vehicles.1 An EF2 tornado with peak winds of 130 to 135 mph then tracked 19.6 miles from west of Wheatland to northeast of Chugwater between 3:07 and 5:28 p.m. MDT, injuring one person, according to NWS Cheyenne.2 Surveyors found homes destroyed or badly damaged and many outbuildings wrecked, worst along Olson Road about 6 miles southwest of Wheatland.3 In the Burns area of Laramie County, hail up to hen egg size broke windows and damaged siding on several homes.4

In Colorado, storms dropped hail 1.5 to 2.75 inches across, and hail with heavy rain flooded streets in Aurora, Castle Rock, Centennial, Highlands Ranch and other Denver-area towns.5 Hail piled knee deep in several areas.5 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $161.1 million in property damage from the June 7 Colorado storms, and $321.1 million along the Front Range for June 6 and 7 combined.5 That evening an EF2 tornado up to half a mile wide moved from south central Elbert County into El Paso County, damaging homes and farm buildings and causing one minor injury.5 At least 136 homes were damaged in Elbert County, 32 of them moderately to severely.5
