What happened

Hail up to baseball size fell on McAllen, Edinburg and Mission in Hidalgo County, Texas, during the mid-evening of March 29, 2012, with up to an hour of continuous hail in part of north McAllen.1 Winds estimated at 70 to 75 mph drove the hail, and McAllen Miller International Airport measured a 74 mph gust.1,2 In that part of north McAllen, every north-facing home lost at least one window, many homes had roof damage, and north-facing rooms and apartments were left with broken glass and water.1,3 Preliminary city figures counted about 1,100 homes and more than 60 businesses in McAllen affected by the wind and hail, and the estimates included 26 city facilities.3 Hundreds of vehicles left outside were badly dented, many with shattered windows.1,3 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $200 million in property damage from the hail in Hidalgo County.3 NWS Brownsville reported no deaths and no serious injuries.1

Farther north, hail up to 4.5 inches across fell near Roll in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma, late that night.4
