What happened

On the evening of August 13, 2011, winds estimated at 60 to 70 mph brought down part of the outdoor stage at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.1 Seven people were killed and 43 were injured, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $975,000 in property damage from the collapse.1 A gust of 77 mph was measured in Plainfield, in Hendricks County, the same evening.2

In central Illinois that afternoon, hail that grew from 1 inch to 2.5 inches across damaged roofs and many cars in Mount Pulaski, in Logan County, where the database lists $800,000 in property damage.3 Hail up to 2 inches damaged several vehicles southeast of Auburn in Sangamon County, and 1.5-inch hail damaged shingles on several houses near Mapleton in Peoria County.4,5

In Hinesville, Georgia, winds estimated at 65 knots (75 mph) downed 25 to 30 trees along Highway 196, where falling trees damaged about 12 cars and shingles and a section of roofing were torn off buildings.6
