What happened

Two storms dropped very large hail across Sedgwick County, Kansas, from about 4:35 to 5:10 p.m. CST. The swath was about 5 miles wide and 15 miles long, from northwest of Goddard through western and southern Wichita to near Rose Hill.1 Hail the size of softballs and grapefruit punched holes in roofs, some big enough for a person's head to fit through, and dented cars along the path.1 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $150 million in property damage in Sedgwick County.1 A hailstone that fell in west Wichita measured 7.75 inches across. A state climate extremes committee declared it the largest-diameter hailstone on record in Kansas.2

From 3:30 to 3:45 p.m. CST, microbursts with winds estimated at 80 to 90 mph hit Greene and Webster counties in southwest Missouri. They destroyed large barns near Rogersville and Zenar, blew the roof off a large workshop near Palmetto and dropped trees onto houses.3,4,5,6 At 7:02 p.m. CST, winds estimated at 70 knots (81 mph) tore across Winfield in Cowley County, Kansas. They destroyed a trailer and tore part of a roof and a large awning off buildings on the east side of town.7
