Where time limits come from
Time limits after storm damage come from two places: the policy and state law. This tool shows what a state's published rules say. It doesn't work out a date, because the policy can set a shorter time and the rule that applies depends on the policy and the insurer.
How to read the rules
- Set by the policy: the state has no rule of its own for this step, so the policy's wording decides.
- No state rule: we found no state rule for this step. That does not mean there is no time limit.
- Effective dates: a rule can apply only to policies issued or renewed after a set date, so check the date beside it.
Questions
- Does this tool tell me my deadline?
- No. It shows published state rules. Your policy may set a shorter time, and an attorney can tell you the deadline for your claim.
- Why doesn't it calculate a date?
- A calculated date could be relied on while a policy sets a shorter time. Which rule applies also depends on the policy and the insurer.
- My state isn't listed. What should I do?
- Check your policy and your state's insurance department. This tool covers the states in our deadlines guide.
