Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

In the late afternoon and evening of March 10, 2026, a storm crossing Livingston and Kankakee counties in Illinois dropped giant hail, with several stones 6 inches or larger in and near Kankakee.1,2 A 6.6-inch stone found in southwest Kankakee is now the official Illinois state record.1 Around Bourbonnais, Bradley and Kankakee, hail of 2 to 4.5 inches damaged windows, roofs and siding on numerous houses and badly damaged many vehicles.2 Another storm hit southeastern DuPage County, where most hail around Woodridge and Darien was larger than 2.5 inches, and hail up to 4.8 inches fell in Darien, where damage to roofs and cars was reported.1,3

The Kankakee storm also produced an EF3 tornado with peak winds of 160 mph that touched down southwest of Kankakee shortly after 6:20 p.m. CDT and stayed on the ground for more than 35 miles into northwest Indiana.1,4 Northeast of Aroma Park, three homes were destroyed and others were left unlivable.4 In Newton County, Indiana, it destroyed multiple homes, and near Lake Village multiple blocks of homes had significant roof damage.5 The tornado killed three people, one in Aroma Park and two near Lake Village, and injured about a dozen.4,5

Late that evening, damaging winds in far southern Oklahoma damaged roofs on several businesses in Marietta and on at least 10 homes in Mannsville.6,7
