Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

An EF3 tornado with peak winds near 140 mph touched down about 12:05 p.m. CST on December 28, 2024, in the Porter Heights area of Montgomery County, Texas, damaging or destroying numerous homes and buildings on a 10-mile path toward Splendora.1 Initial state assessments counted 80 homes with major damage around Porter Heights, and 10 people were taken to hospitals.1 About 12:53 p.m. CST, an EF2 tornado damaged or destroyed homes between Alvin and Liverpool in Brazoria County, killing one person and injuring five.2 From about 2:26 p.m. CST, a long-track EF3 crossed Chambers and Jefferson Counties from near Smith Point to Sabine Lake, with winds estimated up to 161 mph. It destroyed mobile homes, stripped metal from an industrial building, damaged home roofs and blew down two steel transmission lines.3,4

Earlier, about 10:42 a.m. CST, hail to at least baseball size, 2.75 inches, fell in Dermott, Arkansas, and NOAA lists $250,000 in property damage there.5

In Mississippi, an EF3 tornado with 140 mph winds tracked 18 miles from southern Franklin County into Lincoln County starting about 3:13 p.m. CST, damaging homes, rolling a mobile home and injuring two people.6 In Natchez, a large tree blown down by storm winds about 5:24 p.m. CST killed one person and injured another.7 About 11:15 p.m. CST, an EF1 tornado tore roofing from buildings on every side of the courthouse square in downtown Athens, Alabama, and NOAA lists $2.4 million in property damage from it.8
