Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

A single late-night hailstorm crossed Dawson County, Nebraska, after midnight on June 29, dropping hail along a path of about 27 miles through Gothenburg and Cozad.1 Hail up to 2.75 inches fell on the north side of Gothenburg, damaging windows, roofs, siding and vehicles.1 Cozad was hit hardest. Hail up to 4 inches across fell there around 12:50 a.m. CST, and emergency management reported widespread significant damage, with few structures in town left undamaged.2 One person caught outside was injured.2 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $50 million in property damage from the hail in Dawson County, $25 million each for the Gothenburg and Cozad reports.1,2

Earlier that evening in Junction City, Kansas, winds estimated at 70 to 75 knots (81 to 86 mph) uprooted and snapped trees 1 to 2 feet across, dropped a tree on a house and blew the roof off a structure.3,4 In Casa Grande, Arizona, gusts estimated at 55 to 60 mph that evening tore roof tiles from houses, knocked over concrete block walls between homes and blew the roof off a steel shed.5,6,7 In Jacksonville, Florida, a brief EF1 tornado snapped trees and downed power lines in the Holiday Hill neighborhood that afternoon.8
