Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

On the evening of May 28, 2024, a slow-moving storm dropped hail of baseball to softball size across Hockley County, Texas.1 Storm chasers reported a 5-inch hailstone near Whiteface at 6:25 p.m. CDT and a 4.5-inch stone near Pep, and hail of 3 to 3.25 inches fell west of Levelland around 6:35 p.m.1

Overnight, straight-line winds hit Levelland from about 1:30 to 1:40 a.m. CDT on May 29, and NWS Lubbock estimated winds of 90 to 120 mph in the hardest-hit area on the east side of town.1 The winds caused partial roof failures, destroyed several wooden outbuildings and two mobile homes, and broke windows in many homes and vehicles. Many homes then took in rainwater through broken windows or damaged roofs.1,2 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $35 million in property damage and 13 injuries for the Levelland winds.2 Shortly before 3 a.m., a 95 mph gust was measured northeast of Tahoka, where survey teams found some minor roof and siding damage in town.1
