Select a dot or a path for the report. NWS survey teams walked the shaded paths after the storm; each is drawn at the widest width they found, so it can look wider than the damage at any one spot. Gust lines are estimates: the highest gust of the day in NOAA's hourly 2.5 km wind analysis (URMA), which fills in between weather stations. They aren't measurements at any building.

What happened

An EF4 tornado with winds estimated at 170 mph formed near Brookston in Lamar County, Texas, at about 3:16 p.m. CST and tracked about 26 miles northeast through the county, passing northwest of Paris.1 It damaged several dozen homes, businesses and outbuildings, removed the roofs and most walls of several homes along FM 1499, and injured 10 people, with $5 million in property damage listed.1

A second EF4, also rated at 170 mph, touched down southwest of Clarksville in Red River County at about 5:15 p.m. CST, injured 7 people and crossed the Red River into McCurtain County, Oklahoma.2 In Idabel it damaged the roofs of homes in several neighborhoods and destroyed two stores and a church.3 About 220 homes in McCurtain County were affected, 65 of them destroyed, and 10 to 20 businesses were damaged or destroyed. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $35 million in property damage there and 6 injuries.3

Two other tornadoes each killed one person in a mobile home: an EF2 near Pickens in McCurtain County at about 4:46 p.m. CST, and an EF3 with winds up to 155 mph near Cason in Morris County, Texas, which also injured 8.4,5 A later EF3 from the same storm largely destroyed several structures, including small retail buildings, in Bowie County and then crossed New Boston, with $7 million in damage listed.6 An EF2 tornado with 115 mph winds moved through Athens, Texas, blowing out store windows and partly collapsing an industrial building, with $3 million in damage listed.7
