What happened

Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, at 11:10 p.m. EDT on August 3, 2020 (0310 UTC August 4), with maximum sustained winds of 80 knots (92 mph).1 Storm surge flooded 3 to 6 feet above ground along the southern North Carolina coast and South Carolina's Grand Strand. In Myrtle Beach, 483 properties were damaged, and waterfront shops in Southport, North Carolina, were heavily damaged.1 Hours before landfall, an EF2 tornado came ashore on Bald Head Island, blowing in windows and taking roofs off homes, then damaged more homes near Southport.1

Overnight, tornadoes from Isaias hit farther north. An EF3 near Woodard in Bertie County, North Carolina, destroyed several mobile homes and site-built houses, flattening seven mobile homes. Two people were killed and 14 injured.1,2 In Virginia, an EF2 damaged numerous homes and businesses along Highway 58 in Courtland, and Storm Events lists $8 million in damage. An EF1 caused significant damage to at least 8 buildings in downtown Suffolk ($4 million).3,4 Another EF2 tore roofs off and damaged the structure of numerous houses near Antipoison Creek in Lancaster County, injuring 5 people ($3 million).1,5

Earlier, around 1:40 p.m. EDT, tennis-ball-size hail (2.5 inches) fell in the Sonoraville area of Gordon County, Georgia, denting cars and shattering a windshield. Storm Events lists $290,000 in damage for each of the two reports.6,7
