What happened

At 11:11 a.m. CST on January 11, 2020, an EF2 tornado with winds near 134 mph touched down in northern Pickens County, Alabama.1 Along Settlement Road it destroyed six site-built homes and four manufactured homes, killing 3 people and injuring 7, and at least 22 homes were damaged along its path.1 Across central Alabama the line of storms damaged or destroyed many homes, vehicles and outbuildings, and NOAA's Storm Events Database says several places likely had straight-line gusts of 75 to 80 mph.1

Earlier, at 7:35 a.m. CST, a downburst with winds up to 100 mph struck the north side of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, including parts of downtown.2 About 125 homes were damaged, most of them to roofs, soffits or siding, and NOAA lists $1 million in property damage.2 In Louisiana, an EF2 tornado with winds near 115 mph north of Krotz Springs in St. Landry Parish at 6:04 a.m. destroyed mobile homes, did minor roof damage to 6 other homes and injured 4 people.3
