What happened

An EF3 tornado touched down in northwest Dallas shortly before 9 p.m. CDT and tracked just over 15 miles, with peak winds of 140 mph.1 Along Walnut Hill Lane, several gas stations, large commercial buildings and churches, and at least one multi-story apartment complex, had significant roof and exterior wall damage.1 Farther east, the tornado blew out windows at office buildings and removed sections of roof from dozens of apartment units near Greenville Avenue.1 NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $1.55 billion in property damage for this tornado.1

Later that evening, an EF2 tornado in Garland with winds near 135 mph collapsed nearly all of a new warehouse and damaged another warehouse and nearby homes, and the database lists $400 million in damage.2 EF1 tornadoes in Midlothian, Rowlett and Rockwall damaged roofs of churches, stores and homes, and the database lists $10 million in damage for each.3,4,5 Earlier in the evening, emergency managers reported 3-inch hail just northwest of Gainesville, Texas.6

Around midnight, an EF2 tornado with winds of 110 to 120 mph tracked 31.4 miles from Siloam Springs, Arkansas, through Highfill and Cave Springs into Rogers, damaging roofs on many homes and businesses and several hangars at the Siloam Springs airport.7 Wind-felled trees killed two people, a man in a home near Monte Ne, Arkansas, and a woman in a mobile home west of Valliant, Oklahoma.8,9 Early on October 21, an EF1 tornado from Memphis International Airport into East Memphis caused significant roof damage at an apartment complex.10
