What happened

A line of storms crossed northeast and eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois in the afternoon and evening, with winds of 50 to 70 mph.1 An NWS survey in Dubuque County found three paths of 70 to 90 mph winds, with isolated spots of 100 mph, from Epworth to Fillmore, from 3 miles north of Bernard to Bernard, and from Asbury to Dubuque, and numerous farm buildings were destroyed along them.1 Four miles south of Epworth, an anchored mobile home was destroyed and two people were hurt, and a home farther along the same track lost its roof.1 Winds ripped roofs off multiple buildings in Olin and blew the roof off a house in Earlville.1

The largest hail, 2.75 inches, fell near Remer in Cass County, Minnesota, that morning.2 Near Lucas, South Dakota, a storm dropped occasional stones 2 to 2.5 inches across.3 Falling trees and limbs killed two people, one in a car in Fairfield, Connecticut, and a man in Peoria Heights, Illinois.4,5
