What happened

A line of severe storms moved across southeast Missouri and the lower Ohio Valley in the afternoon, with widespread wind damage in western Kentucky.1 In Paducah, Kentucky, wind brought down about 175 feet of a 400-foot broadcast tower and blew bricks off a historic downtown building.1 In Jackson, Missouri, wind stripped bricks from an apartment building, and in Cape Girardeau it blew out windows at a store and caused roof and shingle damage.2 At Kentucky Dam Village, an EF1 tornado and a microburst beside it both reached about 110 mph, and NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $500,000 in damage for the tornado.3,4 Earlier, a hailstone 3.4 inches across was photographed at Barlow in Ballard County, Kentucky.5

The storms crossed Middle Tennessee between 6 and 10 p.m. CDT, in what NWS Nashville called the area's most widespread damaging wind event in at least 15 years.6 In Nashville, an EF0 tornado in Antioch caused significant roof and siding damage to many homes.6 In northern Macon County, a downburst about 8 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, with winds near 85 mph, damaged or destroyed numerous barns.6

In western Kansas, a storm near Sharon Springs destroyed a metal building, with a measured gust of 91 knots (105 mph).7 Trees toppled by the wind killed three people: a boat driver on the Current River in Missouri, a driver near Ullin, Illinois, and a driver near Scottsville, Kentucky.8,9,10
