What happened

Around 1:30 p.m. EDT on May 13, 2019, a hailstorm tracked across southern Wake County into central Johnston County, North Carolina, dropping hail from golf ball to baseball size, up to 2.75 inches across near Williams Crossroads.1 The hail broke windows and did significant roof and siding damage to homes, damaged buildings and businesses along its path, and damaged cars on several dealership lots. NOAA's Storm Events Database lists $95 million in property damage from it.1 A couple of miles southeast of Williams Crossroads, 2-inch hail damaged shingles and cars and broke windows, with another $5 million in damage listed.2

Earlier, at 10:13 a.m. EDT, an EF2 tornado touched down just west of Rolesville Road in eastern Wake County and ran about 10 miles east past Zebulon.3 It collapsed the exterior walls of a home, destroyed several metal farm buildings, and blew out the windows and damaged the roof of another home. NOAA lists $1 million in damage in Wake County.3 It continued into Nash County as an EF1 for about 7 more miles, severely damaging the roof trusses of a newly built home, with $250,000 in damage listed there.4
