What happened

On December 1, 2018, an EF3 tornado touched down near Morrisonville, Illinois, at 5:01 p.m. CST and tracked about 12.5 miles northeast through Taylorville, lifting north of town at 5:25 p.m.1 Its strongest winds, about 155 mph, hit Hewittville on the south edge of Taylorville, where it destroyed or badly damaged several homes and destroyed mobile homes.1 In all it hit 506 structures, destroying 28 homes and causing major damage to 61 homes and 7 businesses.1 It injured 22 people, and Storm Events lists $118.9 million in property damage.1

At 5:34 p.m. CST, an EF2 tornado touched down at the southwest edge of Stonington, also in Christian County, damaging house roofs and destroying several garages and sheds on the northwest side of town.2 Storm Events lists $3.3 million in property damage from it.2
